Can I do this with my BIOS?

I have an ASUS M2N68-LA (IVY8) MB with BIOS version 5.14 dated 7/16/2007. I have been to the HP site and apparently this was the last version they had.

When I look at the ASUS site, they only talk about their plain version of the MB, the M2N68. The latest BIOS version for that MB is 1001 dated 01/24/2011. It say that it includes updates for additional CPU's.

The only warning on the HP site about using BIOS updates from the original manufacturer is:

"Only install BIOS updates from HP. Do not install BIOS updates from the motherboard manufacturer's Web site. Doing so might prevent the computer from accepting an HP System Recovery."

I am using Windows 10 now and do my own backups. I don't care about the Compaq (HP) System Recovery.

Is this version from ASUS compatible? What would it hurt or help to update the BIOS to the ASUS version? Anyone ever done this?

Damn, that sucks! :(
Sounds like a plan to pick up something a bit more powerful for the time being, especially at that price.
Very strange manufacturing choice, although I can see why it would be done in order to cut manufacturing costs.

Is this a prebuilt? You should be perfectly fine to download the Asus BIOS updates from the site.
HP System Recovery is pretty much restoring from backup, which can be done from Windows anyway. Not like anyone actually backs up using that method, preferring to use external HDDs etc.
You will be fine to install these drivers. If you want to, back up your important files onto a USB or hard drive, but I don't think it will be an issue.

Just sounds like HP looking out for those who are fluffing around with stuff they don't know about.

Oops. Sorry. This is a Compaq (HP) SR5237 with an AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4000+(2100 MHz) and 4 GB ram. As of right now, the HP site says the best CPU I can go to is an AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+. I can pick one of those up on eBay for $7 to $15. I know this set up isn't worth putting a lot of money into, but I got curious when I read that the 1001 BIOS would include updates for additional CPU's.

Not much of an upgrade, but dirt cheap price.
I wouldn't try to update the BIOS in that case, as the same motherboard can be used in laptop, meaning that pretty much the update will be incompatible and will f up your system.
Leave it as is right now until you can afford a good upgrade to something like a basic i3 system for $300.

I emailed ASUS this morning and I'll see what they say. I'll let you guys know when I get a reply. Who knows, maybe That BIOS update will allow for an i7 or something ;)

Just heard back from ASUS. Turns out that the chipset is the only part ASUS made and the rest of the board is from HP. That is why the BIOS has to be updated from HP only. Looks like I have the latest and greatest BIOS which isn't much. I might pick up one of those cheap used AMD 64 x2 Dual Core 4800+ CPU's for around $10 - $15 just to give it a little more oomph until I can afford to build a new system. Thanks for all the suggestions.

Make another forum post when you're ready to build with a budget, a minimum I would recommend is $600. Anything lower is hard to work with.
