Hello. Is it possible for my hard drive to fail suddenly?

I was away last weekend and my sister used my desktop to listen to some music when suddenly the iTunes stopped and the PC restarted. However, when it did, it displayed the "Select boot device or Insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key".

Some background: The PC is little over a year old. I have 2 hard drives (1 1TB and 1 500gb where i have Windows 7 Ultimate installed and some work stuff), and have never experienced any crash, BSOD or the like. I've been using my PC mainly for entertainment such as games (aRPGS etc), music and TV shows. I rarely use it for browsing the web since I've a laptop for that.

Anyway, I have tried opening the BIOS and it shows my 2 hard drives, however, on the 500GB, it says: Software Preserve Unknown; while on the 1TB it says Software Preserve SUPPORTED. I have tried a reformat but Windows 7 would only install on my 1TB HDD and I didn't go through with that since it would erase everything on the drive.

What could be the issue? Is my hard drive toast already?
