I have a new 980ti GPU and my old 780 can I use both of them at the same time. If I can will it help by giving fps or will the only useful thing I can do with it plugged in is to just have it render PhysX. Or is it just going to be better and just selling it/giving it to a friend and saving up for another 980ti down the road a better option?

With upcoming directx12 you should be able to use different GPU's, though I think only new dx12 titles will enable this feature. Using a standalone GPU for physx rendering does not improve performance, not even in the few games that actually use physx. Personally I just wrap old cards and save them for when your current cards breaks down, so you always have some backup and are not thrown back to the stone age with a built-in GPU.
