I've been wanting to jump on the X99 platform for a while now, I've picked out a motherboard to use (the MSI X99 Gaming Pro Carbon) and I am torn between the 5820k and the 6800k... I want to overclock it a good bit, not pushing it to it's limit though. The CPU cooler would be the Corsair H80i. With this PC, I game and do some video editing. I guess what I'm trying to ask is which is the better deal given the $50 in price between the two

Solution
I would get the newer 6800k.

http://wccftech.com/intel-core-i7-6850k-vs-core-i7-5820k-benchmarks/ i7 6850k is not same cpu but clock for clock performance is same...since your overclocking benchmarks should still apply

yeah thats like the worst link i have seen in awhile. There is no performance numbers, just clock rate, TDP, specs and pricing...try something with actual benchmarks next time. not to say all that info isn't useful, it is but not by itself.

personally Id go for the 6800K just because its newer better stock clock speed, overclocks good too, but its more expensive though some people do say 5820k would better just because of the price difference. $70-$100 depending on where you buy it. that money could be added on your budget for a better Graphics card, SSD or a better RAM.

if you really dont have anything else to upgrade the 6800k seems a good choice, but mind you $70-$100 can mean alot if allocated properly

Will a comparison graph from Anandtech do? Gaming wise, they aren't that far from each other.

Anyways, I still think the OP would just be fine with the 5820k. But if the OP's willing to pay $50 more for the new architecture, that's Okay too.
