My nvidia geforce gtx 970 is running at x4 instead of x16

hello guys! I have this computer

I have had it for like 2 years. Originally it came with a Nvidia geforce gtx 760, but I upgraded it to a 970. I never really knew what was wrong with my computer but then my friend checked out my shit on gpu-z. He noticed that it is running at x4 instead of x16. So today i took out the graphics card, swapped the 6 pin things and put it back in. I get on and its still running at x4. what can i do guys?

does it go up to x16?

if not, do you have the card installed on the top most pcie slot?

As maxalge wrote, click on the little "?" symbol on GPU-Z to run the render test (next to the PCIe Bus Interface line in this pic). The test will show your true PCIe level as it is when the card is under load.

Click that button "Start the Render Test" and then check your Bus Interface reading to see if it changes.

also is the video card in the top most pcie x16 slot?

i would not be able to do that right now as its 2 am so its a little late. DO u have a steam or skype or something like that so i can contact you tomorrow easier?
