Too Much Thermal Paste/Compound?

So, today I decided to replace the thermal compound on my Graphics card (MSI GTX 960 2x armor 2gb) because the thermal paste seemed to be very dried out yet very wet in the center. So I took some Artic Silver 5 and made a big fat line from the top to the bottom of the graphics card chip. I fired my computer up and I play a bit of PayDay 2 and I usually get under 60 degrees Celsius. But i'm getting up around 50-70, mostly around 65. Is it because I put too much thermal compound? Is it the thermal compound itself?

Hi,

Is it because I put too much thermal compound? Nope, this has nothing to do with that.

Is it the thermal compound itself? I believe so, or there are other factors like the temp in the room, or something you forgot to connect such as fans ...etc.

Are there any suggestions for other thermal compounds that is better for graphics cards? The closest place to me with thermal compound is Radio Shack. I also do have another thermal compound tube called Artic Silver Ceramique 2. Should I try that? I also do have a microcenter around me but it's about 2 miles there and back. Should I go there?

Hi,

Sorry for late reply (different timing). You can try Artic Silver Ceramique 2 seems it is a good one, but make sure to clean the old one on the GPU & the cooler. I dont think there is a thermal for GPU only, the same one you use for the CPU you use too to for GPU.

Hey,

It's all good. But I tried it and it got even hotter. It went to around the 70's. I took it apart and put Artic Silver 5 again. I'm thinking of going to MicroCenter tomorrow and hopefully picking up the Mx-4 thermal paste. I've been reading opinions on what the best thermal paste is for graphics cards and a lot of people have been saying the Mx-4 has been doing good on their cpu and gpu, some say even better than the Artic Silver 5. I'm hopefully gonna pick up one more Artic Silver 5 and the Mx-4.
