XP sp4 ... worthwhile?

I know that MS stopped support for XP at SP3
There is an unofficial SP4
Anybody any experience with this ?

I did a clean install of XP-pro on a Dell E521 .... and since the install IE does not work correctly (Firefox works fine).. SP4 includes IE8 so this may fix my issue.

Personally, I wouldn't touch it. I would strongly suggest that you consider moving off of XP. It is very old and its security and suitability is never going to get better than it is today.

Just go with 7, XP is old, has no security updates, and some new hardware doesn't even support XP, I think. Correct me if I am wrong.

I wouldn't touch it.
However, with only 1GB RAM, your other options (7 or 10) are pretty limited.

This machine is my sons PC .. really the 3rd choice PC in the house.
Runs word/XL and some printing plus email

Not used for games

A used first or second gen Core i3 or i5 business system with a legal Windows 7 license on the box and about 4 -8 GB of RAM can be found for $100-200 depending on where you buy it from. Which is about seventy eleventeen thousand times better then the Athlon 64 X2.

Take 12 seconds to think about the two options....

Found plenty of people selling W7 licenses with COA certificates for under £10 .......... so I'll give W7 a go. Not worth spending any more than that.

Not a good idea, those are OEM licenses that are not valid to be sold outside the system they came with, or volume licenses from corporate accounts. A legal license for Windows is about $70+.

That is what I am going to do.
My son is happy with it as is...it is significantly faster since the clean install.
