Hey guys! So I'm Drew, and I'm new to the forums, but luckily, I am not new to gaming on PC. I have a pretty good rig albeit being a few years old with a gtx 680, an I7 3770k processor, and 16 gb of ram. Soon I'm going to be off to college, and I don't think it's a good idea to bring my big gaming PC with me lol. I was searching for  a suitable gaming laptop around the $1,000 price range. I was looking for one that is on the lighter side and has a decent battery for when I am just taking notes in class. By my research, it seems to me that the gtx 960m is the standard video card for this price range. If anyone has any good suggestions for a gaming laptop like I've described, I'd very much appreciate the feedback!

Solution
I would highly recommend not bringing your expensive gaming laptop to class.

Spills happen, drops happen, hell you'll get drunk and fall down on top of the thing. College is not a place where the people around you will have any money to fix things when they break them.

Get a gaming laptop if that is what you want.
But you can get a brand new laptop for like $100 that will be great for taking notes in class and carrying around with you, and when it dies, oh well.

I'm not a big fan of the state of current laptops, it seems like every one that has a 970m in it is riddled with problems and complaints. Do a lot of research before you pull the trigger on discrete graphics card equipped laptops.

Thanks for the response man! Yes these are all things I am taking into account. I didn't realize the mobile graphics cards tens to have issues, thanks for filling me in. I take very good care of my things (and don't tend to drink either, lol) but thanks again for your input, I'm taking everything into consideration.
