Older High-end Card, or Newer Mid-range Card?

Choosing between these 2 cards. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HEAT, POWER REQUIREMENTS/USAGE, LOUDNESS, AND NEW FEATURES. I only care about performance.

These are the 2 cards: R9 390x. And the RX 480. The RX 480 is a newer card, but haslower performance, while the 390x has better performance, but is older.

AMD is known to keep updating these older cards (They still update the 7000 series? Jesus.) and i feel like the performance of the 390x could last for 4-6 more years till i have to get an upgrade (Besides the performance of the RX 480 is lower then the 390x, so it should last longer). But the RX 480 is cheaper, I might not have to feel so worried about the heatsink melting away so much (XD) so that's my situation.

Which one will do better for me if i can get a MSi 390x for $300 US or a RX 480 for $269 for the Nitro version.

If you are using the Dell Optiplex 755, you are wasting your money on a video card past low range even for coding unless you know the programs you use will use the video card more than the CPU, what system is the card for? While the Core 2 Quad is not a bad CPU, it's well behind the newer Core i5 CPUs. You are probably better off with a faster computer and a low-mid card than a fast card and your existing system.

I feel you already answered your question by saying you only care about performance and then stating that the 390x performs better. The 480 will do better in DX12 games because of asynchronous compute but who know how long that will take to catch on.

I'm in high school. Have no job. And so money is tight. I have $330 and these are my options as i can't go any higher. But i need performance for my classes. But i also need the money. My classes use DX12 for coding and designing games. I need an answer soon.

Which would be better for my last year in high school and collage. (4-6 years)

They will both perform well, you didn't mention above that money was a factor "I only care about performance" so I suggested the 390x. As far as how the 480 performs in coding and designing I'm unaware, but both cards should be able to do fine at 1080 and the 480 can hold it's own at 1440 with some settings turned down.

What system is this card going into? The Dell in your sig comes in three sizes, only the tower will support the cards you have in mind and either of the cards mentioned will need a very strong power supply, not to mention good cooling (particularly the R9 390X which is a real room heater).
You might be better off with a GTX970, it's not that much slower than the big 'R' cards, burns much less power and is easier to cool.
Speak with your tutor as well, both AMD and Nvidia support different levels and features of DX12, maybe he/she will be able to point you to a well rounded solution suitable for your programming needs.
