I recently acquired an old office machine for free, I want to convert it into a semi capable lan machine, without replacing the motherboard. It has a g31t-lm motherboard and enough space for a full sized GPU. I was thinking a q6600 (OC'd) but it doesn't have much room in the case for cooling and only has an 80mm intake and 80mm outtake, so I'd image the gpu would need to be a blower style cooler. I'm just not sure really what to buy or if this MOBO is good enough to do this. I'm only a couple years into PC building, so I don't have any experience with components of this age.

He wants to take it to local LAN events to play tournaments etc.
You won't get far with those old components, best to just build a new rig from scratch, especially considering the entry level for a good gaming PC being very low at the moment, around $550.
You get the best value and quality for components around the $600 mark though, so here is a good i3 ITX machine that I recommend for mobile people and LAN setups.
Should absolutely destroy games at 1080p.
I've put quite a budget oriented model in here, but if you can, spend the extra $100 to get an i5, as it is a much better investment, meaning you will be able to run much higher performance GPUs in future, and the...
