My friends girlfriend is looking for a new pc.

All they play is Everquest (the original) and is looking for a decent pc to play it on.

Below is what they recommended and I told them it was a tad overkill... tad might be an understatement.... but I'll let you guys help me out on this one.

Your suggestions are welcomed, the cheaper the better but keep it so it can still play more new games.

Still insanely overpowered but a good bit cheaper. Could easily pull another $400 off it and not really miss it in most games

If ALL they play is Everquest c., 1999, the cheapest slowest of anything currently available today will smash it.
Not so much if you want to play ANYthing else.

Also... so many great games around, kinda sad to see people stuck in the past playing a 17 year old game.

Or if she's got money and wants a nice upgrade, maybe you'd be better investing the money in things that will actually be appreciated. I'd be looking at things like stepping up to a nicer monitor like a 1440P curved ultra wide, or a nice KB + mouse combo, or a better audio solution in a speaker setup or high end headset. Even something like a better desk and chair might be worth considering. Those are the sorts of things that will be noticeable straight away and absolutely (IMHO anyway) make gaming and spending time in your gaming space a lot more enjoyable.

I can see the sense in getting a decent platform with an Intel i5 and good PSU because that'll last a good few years. But GPUs are still improving at a decent rate and getting a high end card because you *might* want to play demanding games in future is a bit of a waste. I'd be suggesting a lower end GPU now, and then if game choice changes in the future, she'll be able to get more performance for less.

It's the 4Gb, not the cheaper 2Gb, and the Asus is one of the cheaper units. I just have a hard time justifying a 2Gb card, even on a single 1080p monitor. Could go with an Rx480 @$235, psu will easily handle that, but I believe nvidia cards do better on those older games than the newer amd cards. Not sure. I tried Balders Gate on my old X800 and had all kinds of issues that went away when replaced with a 9800GT (years ago). Shrug.
