Go into the sound settings in windows (called sound in control panel on windows 10), under playback, one should be called Nvidia HDMI audio, or Nvidia high definition audo, select it and click the set as default at the bottom.
I've done that and also disabled/re-enabled the devices I'm trying to use.
While the HDMI is plugged into the graphics card? It needs to be the set to output video on that port for it to work I believe , you may need to effectively extend your desktop to that output..
You might have more luck just using an optical output from your motherboard (if it has one) to the surround sound, if your not using it to pass through the video.
