I have an intel i7 4790k 3.6 GHz. My motherboard only supports DDR3 ram but I'm thinking about switching motherboards. But what I need to know now is if my processor only works with DDR3 ram, or if I can purchase DDR4 ram. Any help is much appreciated.

Your processor only supports motherboard that only support DDR3 ram. If you want DDR4 ram your also going to have to get a new processor. Higher speed ram doesn't really increase performance on 4th gen processors, and upgrading to 6th gen is pretty stupid when you have the best 4th gen card.
