I'm about to purchase a gtx 1070 ROG strix oc edition. I have a first gen i7 920 at stock speed. :??: 1080p 144 hz gsync monitor. Am I stupid for buying the gtx 1070 with a old i7 920. It was great while it lasted but I don't know how much it would bottleneck the 1070. Would gync make a difference? Would an overclock make any difference? I do plan on getting a new mobo and i7 6700 or 6700k but that's a few months ahead can't afford everything at once. Thanks in advance

Go for the 1070 if you really want it. It's a solid choice, especially if you're looking to upgrade your cpu in the near future.

To be sure, the i7-920 is strong enough to not cripple the performance of that GPU, but at 144hz the CPU may struggle to pump enough data over to the GPU.

Nehalem i7's are good overclockers as well, so you can always attempt to push a bit more life out of your current CPU.
