Upgrading from AM3+ to Haswell or Skylake, can I use same cooler?

My am3+ motherboard died, and I figured this time I will not just replace the motherboard, but also upgrade my cpu as well.

I have this water cooler here from 2010 http://www.asetek.com/desktop/oem-cpu-coolers/510lc/

My question is will this cooler work on a 1151 or 1150 motherboard? Are the holes on the motherboard in the same spot for am3+ 1150/51?

What 1151 CPU are you going with? If a non-K, they're only 65w TDP CPUs, and many of them produce far less than 65w. HardwareCanucks found that the i5 6400, for instance, draws only 31w more under load than at idle, under Prime95 load, suggesting that it's probably only drawing maybe 35-40w in total.

If you're getting a non-K CPU, they produce so little heat that it's practically pointless to use an aftermarket watercooler, and you risk leaks and pump failures, in addition to the cooler probably being more noisy than Intel's provided solution due to pump noise.

If you're going with a 6600K or 6700K, that's another matter.

I am going to start with a Pentium or i3, then later on upgrade to an i7 6700k when I can afford it.

I don't overclock, I am only a light gamer. I encode a lot of video though, so an i7 is my eventual goal. I would not mind a decent priced quiet air cooler as well. If you can recommend some air coolers that will fit in my case, I will take a look.

This is my case http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811144252
