Could it be simply a cooling problem ?

Hi, first of all if you spared some of your time to comment and try to help thank you !
Here's what's been happening : I usually am really careful with my PC and how it runs. I mainly use it to play games, but for some time I experienced FPS drops from 90 to 5 which lasted roughly for a minute. Then they became scheduled and more and more common, let's say from 3 to 3 minutes. So I decided to open up my PC, clean it up and see if anything changed. Problem is, my cooler has a missing pin, so it's hard to attach it properly so it can actually touch the CPU. Now my PC starts up very slowly and completly shuts down afer 2 minutes, which I am almost sure happens due to this cooler problem. So I wanted to know from anyone with some sort of experience, if I replace my cooler for a new one, will it solve both my problems, being the first one maybe due to overheat ?

those quad cores are beasts. sometimes they just keep running when the cooler is of. once a client came to me and said his pc was very slow and the fan was continuously running 100%.

I opened up the case and there was such a quad core with the cooler laying on the bottom of the case XD

But anyway. try to get into the bios and see what the temperatures are. leave the computer running in the bios for about ten minutes and see how high the temperatures go.

and I would get a new cooler if possible.

what is your computer model and make?

I guess it's a 775 socket.

if it is a 775 socket you can buy this cooler for 5 bucks on eBay and install it...

your cpu may have got some damage from the overheating so if you installed the cooler see if the pc is slower then before the overheating. if that is the case you should get a new cpu.
