I am trying to use my low-res (1368x766) laptop with a second monitor that's 1920x1080. The choices of setting the resolution do not go any higher than that, which is causing it to be impossible to adjust it to the second monitor because I want to use it with a pen. Duplicate is hopeless, the cursor is over an inch away from the pen. Setting the second monitor to be the only one showing the desktop makes it calibrate in some programs, but is not convenient when using the keyboard and does not work in many programs. Is there any way to raise the range of resolution the laptop can adjust to?

Solution

Your system must be seriously screwed up. Hit Windows+P to make sure you are using the right modes, and you can change modes whenever you want.
1) On Extend mode, it should have independent control of each screen, but if nothing gets outputted (even after you move them into the new screen), you might have driver...
You MUST use "extend" rather than clone. There is no other way to increase the resolution of the output to both monitors, since the output is always the size of the smaller of the two.

If you actually need a monitor with pen support, you should consider getting a cintiq

Thanks Basroil, when I use Extend, the tablet functions like a Bamboo--there's no image but i can see my laptop screen. When I use the tablet as the main monitor the tablet works pretty well, but if I want to go back to my laptop screen then I need to disconnect the tablet. Perhaps it's best used with a tower? I have an older Cintiq, this is a similar kind of thing. I'm not sure if the resolution is the issue or not.

2) Again, if this thing uses your standard video output you can change configurations by changing to main monitor only.
3) A windows computer is a windows computer, there is ZERO difference between a laptop, tablet (like surface), or desktop when it comes to multimonitor functionality. Absolutely zero
