I've been gaming for years but my PC preforms terribly, so I thought it was time I went and got a new PC that could run almost any game at high graphics. I'm not much of an expert on computer specs but I watched some videos and did a bit of reading and came to a conclusion on what I would need. Before purchasing however I though it might be best for someone who was an expert to check it out. I'm confident that they are all compatible but I just want to know if my money could be spent better on increasing the overall performance and how well my PC will function with the current criteria. It would also be helpful if you could give a game as an example for what settings I will be able to run on it e.g. Doom/Rome2. Thanks. PC specs are listed below.

CPU - Intel i5 6500 (4 x 3.6 GHz)
Memory - Corsair 8Gb Vengence LP x 2133 MHz (2 x 4GB) (DDR4)
Graphics Card - Nvidia Geforce GTX 970 4GB (PCI-E)
Mother Board - ASUS z170 Pro Gaming (Intel Z170) 6xUSB 3.1/2xUSB 2.0
Hard Drive - 500 Samsung 850 EVO SSD SATAIII Read 555mb/s writer 525 MB/s

If you get the 6500
You could use H170 chipset main board and can save a few bucks (unless the Z170 got some features that you necessarily need)
Also I wouldn't use the stock cooler
Furthermore buy a GTX 1060 (1070 if you got the cash) . There's no 6GB 970 I'm aware of.

Thanks, I'll take a look and probably make some modifications.
I didn't bother to list any of the other components as they don't directly influence the PC's performance but here they are.
Power Supply - Corsiar 550w PSU
Cooler - Hyper 612 ver.2
Case - Deepcool TESSERACT

If you'd be kind enough to tell me what your budget is I could recommend a build for you :)

I don't really know if you need case or PSU but Im guessing if your PC is that old you should.

Get a partner 480 card, much better than AMD reference card.

My Budget is around £900-1000 from what I've seen this should cost me £900 but if you know if I can get some good prices that would be great. I am buying all the parts separately to save me money.

Well my friend I took some time to build the best system I can in your price range.
Although it goes a bit over budget, but it's only 50 quid, and it's definitely worth it.
You get a more powerful cpu, more ram and a more powerful gpu.
Btw, I only went for the founders edition because I absolutely love nvidia's reference design :)
I hope I was useful.
Good luck to you mate.

Thanks man. I'll trust you on this and go with the specs you've suggested. Could you maybe tell how well it could run a game like Arma 3, Rome 2 or Doom on which graphics settings. Doesn't have to be one of them, just a well known game that is known for high graphics, that would be great. I just want to know what to expect.

It would run them easy.
If you like to know more about your graphics card's performance check out this review @techpowerup.
https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1070/
It's got a lot of benchmarks and the frame rates you're gonna get are similar to these.
By the way get a better case if you can(I know, It's a stretch), something like the Corsair Spec 01 or something. It wouldn't make a HUGE difference but it would look better and the overall cooling would be slightly improved.

Yeh, money's not a problem so I can get whatever but I still try to spend as little as possible but still get great performance. Thanks for your help btw, gonna make a massive difference to my experience. This is also a massive leap for me, my computers current specs are a joke. Have to run mediocre games at lowest settings while still effecting my ability to play, and it can't run some at all, so it made sense for me to buy a really good one rather than just an average as I would be stuck with the same situation in just a few years because everything would become out of date.
