Hey guys. The HTPC my roommate and I have set up to watch movies, WMC, browse the web, watch youtube vids, etc. (no games really) has been BSOD'ing lately with the infamous nvlddmkm.sys error and kernel driver flickers. I swapped the card out (Nvidia 8800 GT) which used to be in my primary computer back in the day with the one that is currently (GTS 250) and the issues followed the card. Only started happening the last two weeks, to the point where now it will do it after 1 minute of any video.

Anyway, we're looking to replace the card with something that will fit the bill. Not looking to spend a lot, and can probably get away with a card a few generations back.

Here is what I think I know about the computer, as it was pieced together:

Mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3R
CPU: Intel i5?
PS: Antec 430W

Can anyone recommend some cheap cards? I looked up the 8800 GT specs and was going based off of those, and a list of ranked Nvidia cards, trying to find one maybe a generation or so newer, to keep it under $100.

Solution

I was confused as to what you did.
As you just explained, the problem was the same with the 8800GT installed in either pc, and the 250gts worked in either place.
Your conclusion that the 8800GT is faulty seems correct to me.

Yes, the GT730(64 bit) seems like a good replacement..
If anything it will be a bit stronger and less power hungry...

Fellas thanks for the fast replies. The case is rather small and unfortunately it gets pretty warm also. It's a little bit smaller than the Antec 9000 which I have for my PC.

I see you guys called out the Ti and GTX families. What do you think about the GT family still? I know the old card was a GT, 8 series, but what are your thoughts on the 700 GT series?

Specifically, the 730 GT: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA1N83Z26990&cm_re=730_gt-_-14-133-542-_-Product

It's about 3/4 the price of the Ti and I wonder if it's enough for a HTPC?

Looks like a couple of us are on the same page. Thanks for the clarification wolf. Geofelt... if the problem followed the 8800 GT, how could it be something other than the graphics card? The 8800 GT was in HTPC and 250 GTS in my PC. I put the 8800 GT in my PC and the BSOD's and flickers followed. The HTPC with the 250 GTS had no issues. Wouldn't that make it definitive that it's the card?

If your case is low profile, check that the card you pick comes with a low profile bracket like this:
