So, I recently bought all parts for a new gaming build and want to start building tomorrow. only thing is that I heard you can't simply move HDD or SSD, because of the OS (I have both) because the OS is on the SSD, would it be best to first install a new OS onto HDD (because the OS is on SSD), then migrate it to the SSD. Will this work or is there any easier option? should I just install onto SSD straight away or would the other OS which is locked to other hardware mess it up?

Solution

A new OS will work just fine. I was talking about the original one.

In the new hardware, connect only the SSD
Install the OS on that drive.
Later, after it is all working on the SSD, reconnect any other drives, wipe them and use as needed.

What OS?
What are the old components and the new components?

Not sure where you're going with for the back and forth of the HDD and SSD. Generally, with all new components, a clean install in the new system is advised.

It's Windows 10 (free upgrade form windows 7) My previous PC was one which was shop bought, i'm not sure what components it had at all. My new one has a Z170-A Motherboard, intel i5 6600k, Gtx 970 and 8 GB ram. I was really wondering if installing a new windows 10 OS onto the SSD would mess up because it has teh OS already there.

Your Windows 10 license may well not activate on the new hardware.
The old system was an OEM license, and that OEMness transferred to the Win 10 Upgrade. Tied to that original hardware, no matter which drive its on.

You can try it, but no guarantees it will activate. If it doesn't, your only recourse is to call MS and plead your case.

I don't completely understand that. So even if I buy a new copy and install it, it still may not work? even if installed onto HDD where there is no previous OS?

OK thanks, I'll try this.

On your new build, do a clean install of windows on the ssd.
That is where you want it to be.
Do not have any other drives attached.
You may or may not be able to activate using your old activation key.
Sometimes MS is lenient about this if the os is used nowhere else.
You may need to do a phone activation.
If no joy, you can purchase a new license directly.
