So I installed a new 3TB WD RED (nas), but I noticed it's quite audible, it's definitely the loudest component in my case. It has a very distinct sort of "whistle" sound 24/7, is that normal?

It's not a super loud sound, but definitely louder than my fans and it's well... it's kinda like imagining a tinnitus sound hehe.

I tried running chkdsk but it found no errors with the drive.
I tried WD's own tool (data lifeguard), but it won't run for some reason (instant crashes), even though I followed the guide of removing all USB drives etc.

Hi there SuneDK,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(
You are using this in a desktop computer right?

As there is a chance that there is something wrong with the drive, my suggestion would be to back up the data stored on it.
After that, you can try to attach the drive with different cables(both SATA and power ones) to a different SATA port and re test it with WD's DLG tool.
In case the issue persists, you can try some third party tools as well: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/282651-32-best-diagnostic-testing-utility

Let me know how this goes,
