upgrading pc with windows 7

im upgrading a friends pc who is looking to dual boot with windows 10 and 7 and he has windows 7 right now it is a cyberpower pc and its being upgraded from a amd fx 6300 and gtx 970 to a 6800k and gtx 1070 so my question is does he need a new copy of windows 7? or is the old one going to work?

sorry i have no idea why this is under graphics cards

if the windows 7 he has is NOT the OEM version then you're fine, but if it is then you will need to buy another one because you 're change the hardware of the pc

He can try and see if the MS servers Activates it or not even if it is OEM .

ok i asked and it seems he has a disc from cyberpower with windows 7 on it
will that not work?
also is there a way to keep every thing on the hard drive? as is like programs and files and the desktop? if i do a reinstall for him?

if you are just gonna upgrade the cpu and gpu everything will be the same on the hard drive, when installing a new version of windows like an update you can choose to keep files

best thing is that you try and see if Microsoft activates it or not . If not you can buy Another and enter the bought key without the need to reinstall.

as for keeping the installed programs and desktop , it is possible but will take more time to do it than reinstalling again , so dont bother .

make sure you backup important data ..

you will need to uninstall all the old mobo/cpu drivers then install The new ones and still you could run into System Crashes ... run in safe mode and manually change things

I wouldn't bother ...

ok i asked and he says we wants to do it as he has microsoft office and a lot of other important programs so how is it done?

what if windows in installed on the new ssd he is getting and the files are on the hard drive?
