I5 4690k vs I5 6600k

my friend is currently in a dilemma because the i5 6600k is newer and so forth but then the i5 4690k excels in performance a little.
He'd mainly use it for playing decently demanding games and streaming on the fly,
paired with the GTX 1060.

Solution

I would rather him saving the money for buying a bus pass to job interviews.

8350 is not a meaningful upgrade.

Unless He can get a really good deal on the I5 4690K I would go for the newer 6600K. The difference isn't huge in gaming terms on a 1080P monitor you wont notice much of a difference.

Did you read this thread?
http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-3127627/build-ready-build-750.html#18357499

And I honestly think this is the winner:

If you want only i5 (which is not as good as Xeon with additional game streaming), then get the 6600k over 4690k unless you already have 16 GB expensive rams (but some mobo still support 1600 DDR3 rams)

yeah thanks guys they are roughly the same price so 6600k it is :p
Gigabyte GA-H110M-DS2
he's going to get that motherboard so he saves on buying more ram and so on, this will work right?
Thanks guys

You need something with a Z170 designation. Gigabyte is a good value for money option.

And since you are going for a "K" cpu, you may want to overclock, then you need an extra cpu cooler which will cost you another $50.

If you are buying a K, then a Z170 motherboard, but not overclocking, then it is a waste.

You can get -3% performance with the 6500 on a Gigabyte GA-H110M-DS2 for $60 cheaper minus a new fan... that is $110.

You CANNOT over clock a i5 6600K on a H series 170 chipset.
You NEED a Z series to overclock with.

You and your friend should Gogle the difference between Z, H, and B series 170 chipsets.

edgeyuk, do you HAVE to upgrade because of a dead motherboard? Or is this just an upgrade because you WANT to upgrade?

The reason I ask, and others have pointed to as well, is that there is VERY LITTLE reason to upgrade these days. The performance gain you will see is marginal for the cost of having to buy an entirely new system (motherboard/CPU/RAM).

no i'm asking on behalf of a friend he currently has the fx 6300 and is going to upgrade his gpu to gtx 1060 in doing so is going to need to upgrade his cpu but he currently streams and wishes to continue but i'm not really sure the i5 6600 will carry him over but i think hes going to have to go for it maybe get a better mother board and get a i5 6600k and go with an OC.

but i'm not really sure the i5 6600 will carry him over but i think hes going to have to go for it maybe get a better mother board and get a i5 6600k and go with an OC.

It will make very, very little difference. If he plays games that will utilize 4 cores to their full extent (GTAV for instance), both would struggle with streaming at the same time (look into video card streaming).

If he plays games (quite a few) that only really use 1-2 threads effectively, the i5 will do just fine for streaming.

98% of users wouldn't know the difference between a 6500 and mildly OC'ed 6600k.

i think he's decided to get an fx 8350 and not buy another motherboard and buy the rx 480 lol like i said hes on a budget but he's gonna settle with that until he gets a job in the near future, fx 8350 should be better streaming wise anyway.

I'm not familiar with AMD's lineup, but I'd he can upgrade his cpu without upgrading his motherboard, he's way better off that way....and the 480 is faster and more futureproof than the 1060

DDR3 with skylake is playing with fire my friend. The higher voltage that DDR3 uses can fry the memory controller in the skylake CPU killing the processor.
