Hi guys,
I recently upgraded to my first self-guided pc with the following config

  • MSI 970 Gaming motherboard
    AMD Fx 6300 processor
    Kingston fury 8gb ram
    Gigabyte Nvidia Gt610 2gb ddr3 graphic card
    WD 2TB Hdd
    Seagate 500 GB Hdd
    Hitachi 500 GB Hdd
All this is powered by my old 450watt PSU.
I am also using an aftermarket cooler hyper 212x + 4 system fans (1drawing cool air in from the front, 2 pushing hot air out from the rear, 1 pushing hot air out from the center perpendicular to the mobo)
Additionally, I am using 4 USB 3.0 ports and 4 USB 2.0 ports + Lan port.
With all this config, irrespective of overclocking, my pc has begun to restart very frequently; Sometimes, even before the logon screen appears.
Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

chaituprince,

If you have your CPU overclocked then put it back to stock. Sometimes overclocking it may cause your computer to crash often.

Thanks guys for your quick response. I have monitored the cpu idle and load temperatures and they appear to be normal... The thermal margin stays around 40-45 deg.C...
Could it be because of the 6-8 yr. old 450w PSU?
Is it because 450W is not enough or the PSU is too old to deliver an output of 450W?
And btw, currently the cpu is not overclocked.

Hi,
Yesterday, I bought a new 500W PSU to test. And I tested the system for hours and it has still not crashed.
So, it appears that the old PSU was not able to draw enough power for my system. And I think even a 450W PSU would have been sufficient for the given config.

Hi,
The system was working smooth and I also tried overclocking the amd fx 6300 to 4100MHz with 1.4250 V (Auto clocked using OC Genie).
The pc was operating at normal temperatures in spite of heavy operations for 3-4 hrs. Then I rebooted to turn off overclocking. But it just switched off before OS could load.
So, I pressed the power button... Nothing happened.
I pressed it again... And then bang.. Spark... And nothing worked after that.
I checked and found that the spike guard got busted. So, I replaced it with a new spike guard and put back my old 450W smps as I suspect that the new PSU might have got damaged because of the spark.
The pc was able to boot and the original problem is back again... System keeps restarting...
What can I do to get it working again? I don't wanna lose the expensive mobo and cpu at the cost of a cheap PSU.
Please help!

It was some "Enter" 500W PSU that I had bought for testing purpose.
It might still be working, but I think I should not take any risk and replace it with some branded 650W PSU like Circle or Cooler Master.

Agreed! I got the PSU replaced.
Unfortunately, the local shop did not have any higher wattage PSUs. :/
So, I had no option but to replace with any branded ones available. I got Circle 400W.
The PC is up and running again and fortunately, the CPU and Mobo are working properly now.

Planning to keep this on stock settings for time being until I buy another PSU from market.

Thanks alexoiu for all the help!
