CPU won't start

I built a PC with the MSI 970 mono, a stick of 4gb ram, and a gtx 750 card. Processor is the am3. Computer itself turns on fine but there is no signal to monitor. And when I power down the CPU/heatsink is totally cold as if it didn't run. What's going on here?

Have you connected the CPU power cable (the 4/8 pin one) to the motherboard?

Yes I have, its a small white 4 pin that I plugged into half of the 8 pin. Do I need a different supply? This one is really old. Came with a gateway fx400xl

It could be a power supply issue. Do you know its model/wattage?

I'd go with a 500-550W one, if not intending to upgrade the configuration in the future.
