I am thinking of getting a 4K monitor but what gpu do I need?

I currently have a gtx 780 MSI but what will I need to upgrade to to be able to play 4K at medium settings?

I think your 780 should be good enough for 4k at medium, but it really depends on your games, so you'd have to test it. You can simulate the load of a 4k game by downsampling, which renders the game at a higher resolution then reduces the size before the frame gets sent to the monitor. If you post the FPS at medium 4k, I can suggest a GPU to upgrade to.
