Hello, I need your help. How on earth do I remove this old CPU cooler from a MSI motherboard??

The cooler itself has metal parts on each end that attach to the actual CPU socket like a clasp but doesn't have the clip on modern AMD coolers. I can push the metal down so it moves off the CPU socket but it hurts like hell to hold it down.

Cannot find any reference for the board model or the cooler itself.

Please help :0

Yep, you need to use a flat bladed screwdriver.
If you look closely at the clasp, there's a small piece of metal at the bottom of the rectangular hole. You insert the screwdriver into the hole and into the gap between the clasp and that piece of metal, push down to release the spring tension, then leaver the clasp out and away from the locking tabs on the CPU socket.
Be EXTREMELY careful doing this, use a driver that fits closely and place some sort of protection over the motherboard, two layers of cereal box type card will do the trick, held in place with a little blu-tak or similar.
Also be aware the cooler may be reluctant to come free, do NOT just pull it out and up, push gently down and twist it, older CPUs' use many, many tiny...

Looks like you just have to press down that metal clasp, with the two bands attached to it, and the pull it off those plastic retaining tabs, at the base of the CPU socket. Good luck!

Thanks guys! That's solved it. Its just a spares and repairs job and I wanted to know what the CPU is without powering it on. You'll be happy to know the CPU cooler is in the bin xD
