dell precision 490 non-ecc ram

The 490 uses Fully Buffered RAM. This is seriously different than regular RAM ( not counting the ECC non ECC issue). The FBDIMM has a controller chip that sets up a high speed serail bus between the memory modules with 4 channel support, and then converts the data back to parallel on the memory controller bus. This requires a lot more cooling also. The recommendation is to fill 4 slots with matching modules (not the usual 2) for best performance. The correct modules aren't too hard to find and cost less than hiigh capacity DDR2 modules on the surplus market. Heatsinks and fans are required because all the added heat comes from one small chip. The modules communicate with each other so close matching is very important. I suggest buying in complete sets.
