Hi everyone~

After some days of formatting, partitioning and installing windows 10 (home) on a 500GB Seagate Baracuda, today a popup message of "Windows detected a hard disk problem" appeared and I'd like to know how to proceed, since I currently don't have some other hard disk or storage to store a backup.

I did some research and installed some tools: HD Tune Pro (trial) and Seatools. In defraggler there was a "Warning" in yellow about disk health before I partioned my HDD, but no windows hard disk problems message or startup warning (from BIOS, I guess) about imminent disk failures. For now, I didn't notice any slowdowns or difficulty with data transfers/downloads.

I ran those tools and got a "pass" with Seatools and 0% damaged blocks in HD Tune (everything was green on error scan). In the latter, however, in Health tab theres 2 redded things and one light-blue-ish (respectively):

(05) Reallocated Sector Count 36 36 36 2639 failed
(C4) Reallocated Event Count 36 36 36 2639 failed
(C7) Interface CRC Error Count 200 200 0 2 attention

What can I do for now? Can I ignore that windows warning? It keeps showing up btw. I didn't do any physical harm (drops, kicks, etc) to my desktop, but I should note it's a pretty old system (bought in 2008 or 2009). Thanks in advance (and as a non-native english speaker, sorry if I wasn't clear enough).

Also tried chkdsk on command prompt and no errors were found.

and my system, if it's of any use:
Intel C2Q Q8300
Ati Radeon HD 4350
2x2GB DDR2 RAM
Seagate Barracuda 7200 rpm HDD
Currently on Windows 10 Home 64-bits (came with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bits)

Welcome, @7akashi!

Unfortunately, you won't be able to ignore these warnings for too long! You should definitely backup all your data from this hard drive somewhere else immediately!!! The health tab lists the S.M.A.R.T. attribute results which basically tell you the health status. The raw value of the reallocated sector count parameter indicates number of bad sectors you have on the drive. These are corrupted sectors that cannot be fixed or repaired. Unfortunately, they also contain data that is also corrupted. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do about this HDD of yours, so you should definitely replace it ASAP!

You are very lucky that you still got access to the files, so back them up. Running any additional tests/chkdsk will put additional stress on the drive which could potentially damage the HDD & the data further.

You should also check the warranty status of your hard drive on the official manufacturer's website. If it's still covered, you should be able to send an RMA request and get a replacement from them.

Best of luck!

Hi @SuperSoph_WD!

Thanks for the explanation. Unfortunately my warranty ended in 2012. For now, can I do anyhing until I get another drive (besides not using my pc), since I have no idea where those corrupted sectors are? I'll provide a new one asap as you pointed out though.

Thank you!
