Hi guys,
This is my spec:
Intel Pentium G2020 @2.9Ghz (Ivy Bridge budget dual core...)
8Gb DDR3
GTX 1060 (upgraded from Radeon HD 4830)
Corsair 430W PSU
This is the setup I had for a few years except obviously the graphics card which I just got.
From what I know (and am pretty positive) GTX 1060 draws about same amount of power as HD 4830, both require 6pin for extra juice. Also my CPU is TDP 55w so it's a very energy efficient setup so 430w PSU should be ok.
So here is what is making me nuts!
I bought this card mainly to play Starcraft 2 @ ultra settings without frame drops. And the first day it seemed great! FPS hovered between 60-120fps @ ultra settings. GPU temp around 82C
Now for some reason, GPU temp stays at 40C, and FPS drops as low as 15. Pretty much unplayable.
So I thought it must be defective card or defective PSU or defective PCI-e slot.
Well I had both my PSU and motherboard for a few years so unless they happened to die at this peculiar time (pretty unlikely), I thought it must be the card.
But I ran a benchmark program called Heaven 4.0 and I get a good score (1170 @ ultra settings, 8x AA, 1080p) and I check GPU-Z and GPU load goes up to 99% or 100% which is fantastic. So the card works!
But when I play Starcraft 2, I check GPU-Z and the GPU load only goes up to 40%. So somehow this game is not utilizing the card even though apparently the first day it did.
I mean, I would assume it's the CPU bottlenecking the GPU except I know from my experience on the first day that the game ran fine... It's very frustrating to me because I only bought this to play Starcraft 2 (pretty much) without FPS drops, and I can't figure out what's wrong.
I mean, the card works fine when I stress-test it with a benchmarking program. So does anyone have any ideas/solutions for me?
Thank you so much!
