USB hub for peripherals

How bad are they? Should I rely on USB hubs for my mouse and keyboard due to lack of length and ports. Should I use USB hub or USB extender instead? Which will give me the best performance/connection? I had an old usb hub 3 port in the past and it doesn't always connect to the devices.

How about PCI-E hubs for USB? I've seen some. Any of them that has back port for me to replace? I have some space below my GPU and I only have a single slot x1 PCI E left and I want as much USB I can get from

Sorry for a long post in short:
USB Extender vs USB HUB vs PCIE USB HUB for gaming

Solution
USB hubs are fine as long as they are good quality mains-powered ones so as to avoid running out of power at the computer's USB ports.

Particularly relevant if using one or two portable hard drives or other peripherals which rely on max USB power to drive them.

If you just need more ports and there's no existing USB power issues, drop in a PCI USB card.
