Can i use 2 different GPUS to run dual monitors in HDMI?

Hi guys,

I have a vertical dual ultrawide monitor display, both connected to my GTX 970. The bottom monitor (LG 34 inch ultrawide) is directly connected to the HDMI port in 2560 x 1080 (its natural resolution), and since my GPU only has one HDMI input, i had to connect the top monitor (LG 29 inch ultrawide) to my GPU using a HDMI to Displayport adapter. The problem is that the display port doesn´t support 2560 x 1080 resolution, so my top monitor is in 1920 x 1080 all stretched.

I bought a Dual link DVI Cable because i heard it supports 2560 x 1080 resolution, but when i plugged it on my top monitor and my GPU , even though my top monitor is now on 2560 x 1080 resolution, the image is way worse than before with one of the worst qualities i have ever seen, the screen is all blurry and i can barely read whats in it.

I then bought an HDMI splitter, later to realize it just duplicates the screens.

Before i ask my question, i´ll show you my PC Specs:

CPU: Intel Core i7-4790k | 4.00 GHz

CPU COOLER: Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

GPU: MSI NVIDIA GTX 970 Gaming Twin Frozr HDMI DVI-I DP Graphics Card (4GB, PCI Express, DDR5, 256 Bit)

RAM: Corsair Vengeance Pro Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3 DRAM 1600MHz

MOTHERBOARD: Asus H-97 Pro Gamer 1150 Socket

STORAGE: - Samsung 120GB 850 Series 2.5 SATA III
- Seagate 2TB SATA III 64MB

POWER SUPPLY: Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Now my questions are:

- Since i´ve been planning to get an MSI GTX 1080 for a while, can i just use that card HDMI output to plug my main monitor (bottom one - LG 34 inch ultrawide) and use my GTX 970 HDMI output to plug my second monitor (top one - LG 29 inch ultrawide) ?

( If i do this, i plan to game just on my main monitor, the LG 34 inch powered by The GTX 1080, and just use my GTX 970 to power my LG 29 monitor by HDMI and probably also as a dedicated PhysX card)

- Would the performance of my PC be lowered by running these 2 different GPUs?

- Since i would be running 2 graphics cards, i checked http://outervision.com/power-supply-calculator to know to what PSU i would have to upgrade to and it said i should go something with 750 W . I plan on buying the "Corsair CX-750W (80+)" since it´s the only one i can get my hands on.
Is that enough to power the two different GPUs? Will that power supply have enough ports to connect the 2 GPUs?

P.S: I also plan on buying another 34 inch LG ultrawide monitor (just like my main one) to replace my 29 inch ultrawide top monitor.

Thanks in advance for your help.

That one will probably work, it is clearly advertising DP to HDMI 1.4b, which is certainly capable of the resolution you want.

That said, is this one OK? Notice how it clearly advertises HDMI 2.0, which is the newest revision. I am certain 1.4b will work for you, but i'd rather you not by a revision old adapter...
Something is wrong.
Your GTX 970 is 100% capable of running your two monitors without any difficulty at all.
If you replace it with a GTX 1080 you're better off selling your GTX 970.

There is no reason your GTX 970 can't do this.
Display Port is capable of MASSIVE resolutions, it is far and away the most powerful port on your card.
When you plug your DP to HDMI adapter into the second monitor... did you try and go into settings and manually set the resolution to ultrawide? DP->HDMI 1.4 should be more than enough to do this.

Like i said, something is wrong, whether it is a setting or a bad cable, i'm not sure, but the situation you describe is 100% compatible with your GTX 970, just a matter of figuring out why the resolution isn't set up right.

Hi man, thanks for answering so fast.

I did try to change the resolution on my top monitor to 2560 x 1080 but it just goes up to 1920 x 1080 and it is set as "recommended".

This is the DisplayPort > HDMI adapter i bought : http://www.globaldata.pt/conversor-displayport-hdmi-delock.html

It also says in the item description : "Resolution up to 1920 x 1200 and HDTV up to 1080p"

Did i pick the wrong adapter? Is there a similar one that can support 2560 x 1080?

Probably the adapter, what happens when you switch your monitor that works correctly to it? probably the same thing. I highly recommend Club3D's line of DP to HDMI 2.0 adapters. They cost a bit more, but are reliable up to 4k@60hz

That one you just showed me "Club3D Displayport 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 UHD Active Adapter, CAC-1070 (UHD Active Adapter) " would be even better for me because i wouldn´t have to rearrenge my cable management.

Please don´t take this the wrong way, but i´ve been through so much with this resolution thing that i´m exhausted and unsecure at this point. But would i be safe buying this adapter that you just suggested? There´s a very high probability that it would work, right?

By the way, will i also have to buy an HDMI 2.0 cable to plug into the adapter or will any HDMI cable do the work?

Thank you Greens.
