Hi all, i have a gateway NV56R10u (win10 64bit) that came with a single 4 GB module : Hynix 4GB PC3-10600 DDR3-1333MHz non-ECC Unbuffered CL9 204-Pin SoDimm - P/N HMT351S6BFR8C-H9, works fine. i am trying to add another 2GB module, a Samsung 2GB PC3-8500 DDR3-1066MHz non-ECC Unbuffered CL7 204-Pin - P/N M471B5673EH1-CF8.

either module works, alone or together ( but only lower module slot is recognized ) and the BIOS is a POS btw. Ya, I know the samsung bus is pc-8500, cl7 and the hynix is pc-10600, cl9 …. the samsung is an older DIMM…. but ya would think the gateway would default to the slower clkng ram when both installed and give me 6!!. This is a backup laptp when the DT quits (win7P-32useless) ( no one supports this poc! )

is there anything i could do to get these 2 DIMMs to work or am i hosed getting 6 GB here? ( maybe my upper slot doesn’t work? (there's only 2 slots ...Did gallway put a switch sumwhere ?) thxs

Hello... That's why I use and build desktops... it's easy to get under the Hood and find replacement parts... Well that how it should be done, the reset makes the BIO's re read your RAM and set/change communication settings for them... as you found out from your earlier Tests and results.
1) remove MB battery
2) place jumper pins/switch on MB to clear the capacitors... for ~3 mins
3) remove Jumper/switch
4) re-install battery

Look in your manual for the correct RAM slots you want to use/test for "Dual channel" OR "single channel" operation with this MB.

5) re-move and re-seat your RAM stick(s) into the MB slots.
6) Boot computer.
7) look in the BIO's for desired settings (save&exit)

thxs 4 the quick reply.....but...are you serious? my god, i just had the LT torn down to replace a USB conn and screen.....and what did i find under the keyboard....UNDER the keyboard......the mem battery....which i replaced thinking when the heck am i ever going to take this apart again!.......why gateway why.....so, are you absolutely positively sure about this, as the LT can "see" either DIMM ( alone )....
.....additional....as soon as memtest finishes i am going to install the samsung 2GB with a samsung 1GB to see if it recognizes 3GB (w/o a cmos clr) ( both 1&2 were a (working) set from another LT)....and i'll report back....thxs & later

well, got it back together....finally, can't believe this one's battery location in this day and age!

thanks for your help...now i have 5.84 GB & more tiny screws to add to my collection...

Hello... Well glad I didn't make you do something you didn't have too... B )
I take a digital picture and keep screws in labeled containers... sometimes you don't have a chance to get back to finishing some projects... but It seems, I get no left over screws or parts B ).

I'm Working on 80's Casio CZ-101 Keyboard right now, and they have quite few Build/Repair Quirks... This thing had Vintage hand soldered "Solid Copper" Flex (fold) cables between the Circuit boards, I Think theses things were made to Fold Once, AND once only... I had to take the time to re-do 38 solder joints, with a "stranded" copper flexible type.
