Hi guys and gals,

I am currently having a bit of trouble with my external Western Digital Elements Solid State Drive (Code 10). I have tried many different solutions and have been over many forums and websites over the last 24 hours. I have even tried using multiple PC's to try and get the drive working but nothing seems to work for me.

Get back to me asap please,
Thanks,
Zila

What happens when you try to access the drive with the recovery apps? Do these even recognize the drive? If the drive is not recognized by these tools, then I doubt it would be recognized by WD's DLG testing tool.

It would be nice to try a different USB cable. In case the issue persists, then the device is in a really bad condition or it has already failed.

One thing you can try, is to see if you will be able to access it with some data recovery tools for DOS mode.(as OS based tools do not really help) The Ubuntu Live CD is one of those. You can boot up from a flash drive or a CD(don't install it), locate the drive and see if it would be accessible: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/267999-32-recover-data-mode

Hi there Zila,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD drive. :(

It would be nice if you provide some more information on what you've already tried.
As you've attached the drive to different systems, then I believe we can rule out a possible driver related cause.

Do you have important data stored on the drive? Is the drive under warranty?

Here are a couple of things you can try:
- Go to Disk Management and see whether and how is the drive recognized over there.
- Attach the drive with a different cable.
- Try to test it with WD's DLG tool(short and extended tests): http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cQC3cj

Let me know how this goes,

Thank you for your reply
Well,
(I believe I no longer have warranty on it)
I have tried to chkdsk /f /r
I have tried to uninstall the device
I have tried to recover files with multiple recovery apps
I have tried the uninstall all Universal Serial Bus controllers trick.

Disk Management does not load whilst the device is plugged in as well. Which means I can't factory reset or even change the letter format :(

There are threads on data recovery tools for DOS mode in the community. You can try some other ones as well.

If none of these helps and if the data is really important, you will need to look for some professional help. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=e6nsxk
