I believe you should most definitely replace your WD drive since the S.M.A.R.T. test shows you that the Reallocated sector count attribute is failing, @HardwareTwitch! :( Please refer to the links in my previous post with details on how to proceed with the RMA procedure. You can contact our customer support either phone or e-mail for details and assistance.

Let us know if you have more questions, though. Good luck!

Basically while your drive may still be passing the extended test, SMART has triggered seeing that something is going to go wrong. SMART is basically an early warning system. Grossly oversimplified but you get the idea.

This is the point where you immediately backup your information from that drive. If its still under warranty, you can RMA to drive to the manufacture. If it's not under warranty, you can pull it apart for some cool magnets and platters. Do not keep using it, as the drive has signaled its imminent hardware death.

Download CrystalDiskInfo and check the SMART counters to see which one(s) failed. If certain ones have failed like Unrecoverable Errors or Unrecoverable Sectors, you will want to back up your important files and get a replacement drive because it could fail at any time. It might not completely fail and you might just start getting corrupt data too. I am in the process of replacing my storage drive for the same reason.

You can run a chkdsk <drive letter>: /f /r to test all the sectors on the drive and find out how many have went bad and if they are in the used or unused portions of the disk. If you do, be advised the scan will take hours. If there are bad sectors it will take longer. Fortunately in my case, all the bad sectors are in the unused area.

Hey there, @HardwareTwitch!

Unfortunately, I'm afraid that @azaran is right! You should back up all the data from the HDD somewhere else immediately and then check the warranty of the 500 GB WD drive. If it's still covered, get in touch with our Customer Support for further assistance with the RMA procedure.

Moreover, I'd also recommend you try running the DOS version of the Data LifeGuard Diagnostics utility to see how the HDD passes the QUICK and EXTENDED tests without booting into Windows.

Best of luck! Hope this was helpful!
