I'll start at the beginning to give yo uan idea of my potential problem(s)

I recently bought a new computer from an independent trader.
When I got it it said I needed to activate windows and I had 28 days to do it.
The guy I bought it from logged on remotely and added a Product key.

So I deccided to install a load of software before I backed up. I did a system restore point just in case...

I think the problem started when I installed office 2010 but can't be sure. I have unistalled since then.

Suddenly I get an error to say my windows is not genuine, with errors 0x80070003 & 0x80070424.
I followed the FIX It forums and If I run a windows diagnostic it comses up with the 0x80070003 error,
If I try to update its the 0x80070424 error

The guy I bought it from logged on remotely to re-activate, but the option to re-activate has disappeared.
We ran various fixes but to no avail. He insists its a genuine activation code, and besides the amount of time he has
spent trying to fix it and re-activate justifies that its genuine or at least the new code should be, If we can re-activate

Anyways, I find myself in the postion of being in some sort of mad loop. My system restore point will not work,
so I can't jump back to the beggining. I can't re-activate windows or even type in a new producct code.

Any ideas?

Solution
I'd get the guy you got it from to re-install and re-activate it. Why would he have to remote in to give you the product key that you should have?

3 options:
1. Make the seller provide a known valid OS license. Him logging on and doing it is not 'valid'.
MS licensing requires a transfer of the COA, license key, and install media.

2. Call MS

3. Buy your own OS.

In no possible way would I trust an OS that needed the previous seller to log on remotely and attempt to activate it. No way.

Ok, I can see that point. but lets just say I take him out of the equation and get my own product key.. How do I update?

You buy a valid OS from Microsoft/Amazon/Newegg/etc. About $100.
Boot from that, and wipe the entire drive in the process.
Install the new OS you purchased.

Can I do it without having to do a clean wipe?

Given the history and the shady dealings from the seller, I would not trust that OS.
He's already remoted in. Did he leave something behind? You don't know.

For any system where you are not the absolute known first owner...wipe and reinstall.
