Small Office Network (5 computer) Slow

I have a small office network consisting of two separate servers and about 5 computers. Our business has two public static IP addresses; these IP addresses are separated by two routers. Our network configuration is: modem -- switch -- router 1 and router 2
On router 1 -- 8 port Gigabit switch with 1 server and 5 computers in workgroup
On router 2 -- Single server running N-computing boxes and utilizing terminal services

Network on router 2 is good, however local network speed (not internet) is slow on router 1. The 5 computers are basically just reading and writing to a database file that is on the server, however when all of the workstations are online, the system will sometimes be very slow. The 8 port Gigabit switch is a LInksys consumer grade switch, which I will be switching out for a business grade switch soon to test the outcome. Other than changing that switch, troubleshooting netcard speeds in each of the PC's, and possible corruption of the data file that these computers are reading and writing to, is there anything else that you guys can think of that I should check? This setup is very basic so I am running out of possibilities to why it is sometimes to slow.
Please ask me to clarify if any of this doesn't make sense.

Thanks in advance!

You should start by watching the process monitor on your server. Verify that it is not the limitation. 5 simultaneous users could overload a single gigabit network. You may want to get a switch that supports link aggregation to allow you to run two links into your server.
