I suggest sticking with the i3 6100, like Corwin65 said there are some AMD cpus that do compare at the price range, bu they are not worth it. Buying a newer cpu on a modern platform mobo will make upgrading in the future much easier and less costly. Also take the RX 480 over the 960, much better performance for gaming and it will make your experience all the better.

Most AMD chips are about /as good/ as an i3. The bonehead move I made was going from an FX6100 to FX8350 and expecting to see real improvement, and the 8350 was a $150 dollar upgrade at the time. I see performance pretty close to having a beefy i3, but that's about it.
