Hey, I am completely getting rid of two of my harddrives 500gb x2 and upgrading both to SSD. One 500GB the other 120GB ( I got this as a hand me down). My question is this, is there anything I need to do before doing a clean install on a SSD? I know I need to change the sata mode to ACHI in bios settings. However, what is raid? And is this something necarrsy when you have more than one storage device? Also, should I only hook up the 500GB SSD first when I perform the clean install then add the other? Thanks in advance for replies.

Your good, raid is when you have multiple drive and want to split data so speeds are faster, or duplicate the data for redundancy, things like that, I would suggest just unplugging the one that you don't want to install Windows on, the install on the one you left plugged in, then plug the other one in, they will be setup as two separate drives.

You do not need to worry about RAID. RAID is used with identical drives when you either want to parody data or have the system use multiple drives as one large, quick drive. For your situation that is not the case.
I personally have never had an issue with leaving multiple drives connected while installing the OS but I have seen that recommendation made in the past. So if you want to play it safe, just connect the second drive after your OS is installed.

Treat them as you would any HDD in regards to installing them.
The basic rundown of RAID is either you use both drives together to create backups of all information saved, or you use them to read and write data much faster. Don't worry about RAID right now though, because you won't be able to RAID a 500gb with 120gb. Much like running SLI or Crossfire on graphics cards, you need identical drives preferably from the same batch.
