MY Hardware:
500gb western digital HD
4GB RAM at 800Mhz
Ati radeon 5770 graphics card
AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb Quad-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM3 95W
750W corsair power supply
Biostar MCP6P M2+ motherboard

I upgraded from Athlon 62 dual core 5000+ 2.6ghz to AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb Quad-Core 3.0 GHz Socket AM3 95W. My motherboard is MCP6P M2+ rev. 6.1 I have CPU-z installed and it says AMD processor model unknown but it shows that it's a phenom II x4 945 running at 3.0ghz. How do i fix the processor model unknown? I think it could be my BIOS from what I've researched but when I try to enter my BIOS it's running super slow and freezes forcing me to restart my system. It boots to windows 10 PRO 64bit fine but i can;t enter my BIOS.

Solution

you first need to go back to the chip you were using before rule of thumb always upgrade the bios before you do this next time to prevent freezing and system, failure

how do i check my bios version?
and what do you mean by old chip?
oh you mean my processor. just realized that. anyways how do i flash my bios with the lastest version?

each board may be slightly different so I suggest follow biostars instructions on your board or in your boards manual ?

then if you bought that cpu used like off ebay you never know if it was bad from the start ? biostar don't offer much good help or support on that board all I can see off hand was that bios adding that C3 support ?

may work then may not you seem to be where you need to try and see

could be using that so called OS windows 10 on that older board ? I would not look over that issue

now you could try Linux live bootable dvd to see how it reacts on it un hook that hard drive with ten on it and boot off the Linux dvd to desktop and all if it looks good on it then could be something up with 10 ??

You can download the Linux Mint operating system for free. It comes as an ISO file
which you need to burn to a blank DVD. The liveDVD is then bootable and provides a
fully-functional operating system which you can try without affecting your PC. In
layman's terms, when you put Linux Mint on a DVD and place it into your computer, you
can try it out while leaving your current system intact.

I keep one around just for these reasons if I need a back up / test / emergency OS to quickly use and get something going

Maybe i should try putting my old chip back into the motherboard, updating the bios, then putting the new (used) chip back into the motherboard and try booting then. And see if my computer recognizes the cpu. I already have ubuntu as a secondary os on my hard drive and i have a laptop too for backup.

Thankyou for your help. You learn something new everyday! :D

no problem by any chance what cooler are you using and thermal paste ? just saying these chips run hot and you have quite the space heater of a pc with the graphics card and the phenom you may want to get additional cooling and whats the case ?

I'm using a rosewill case and zalman 92mm coper cpu cooler and artic silver 5 thermal paste. I have additional 120mm fans if i need more cooling.

name of the rosewell case ? there are alot of them lol

also you may want to jump ship from artic silver 5 mainly cause it can nuke your board etc if it gets on anything other then the cpu lid

i recomend thermal grizzly as a good replacement and knocks of 4 to 5c depending

the cooler is fine

no problem but if its using stock fans id get some better fans later on but for now id recomend just upgrading cooler and see how that goes it should make the world of diffrence good luck and keep me updated and if need any pc advise drop me a pm and ill get back to it
