Hey everyone. I am trying to pick up a wifi connection from my father's apartment, from the building next door. (I have his permission) So in between our buildings there is a brick garage that I believe is blocking the wifi. If I stand in the backyard from equal distance from where my office inside the building would theoretically be, I can get signal. If I go inside the buidling, the angle changes and is now being blocked by the garage. I wanted to try a long range usb wifi antenna, like a 9bi. Can you guys recommend a solid budget antenna, like 30-40 bucks? Would this help pick up the wifi if it is being blocked by the garage or am I out of luck? The distance is maybe 50-75ft, but again it doesn't seem to be the distance that is making the issue, because when I step inside the apartment it immediately stops. Thank you.

You might try a repeater it will reduce the total speed by at least 1/2 but it may still be good enough....it is better than nothing I suppose.

If you can run a ethernet cable over the floor you could use a client-bridge..basically a wireless nic that runs on a ethernet cable. These are the same unit you would put on the roof if you did it that way. Something like engenius enh202.

You many times can run a wireless repeater as a client bridge but they are more expensive than dedicated client bridge units.

Unlikely there is anything that will fix it. If for example it barely worked a larger antenna might help but in general because of how radio waves work as you increase your signal levels the amount of signal the wall or whatever absorbs also increases.

Brick and concrete walls tend to do a very good job of blocking the frequencies used by wireless. But there are many things that block it. You will find window films you can see though that can completely block wifi.

You either have to find a way to go around, over or though the obstruction. If you could put a pair of outdoor wireless bridges on the roofs of both building you might be able to go over it.

Thanks for the quick response. I have a new discovery, but I am unsure if there is the correct hardware available for a solution, maybe you can help me. So I found an area in the back of my apartment that misses the angle of the garage gets a pretty decent signal, it was enough to watch an HD youtube video. The problem is that it is in a back closet/mudroom and it's a VERY small area, I can't plug my computer and work out there. So is there some kind of router (excuse me if that is not the correct term), that can be plugged into the wall (no computer) that picks up the wifi signal and then re-distributes it into my apartment so I can connect wirelessly from my laptop. So to be clear, the source of the internet is coming from a router in my dad's apartment, I need to setup a standalone router of some kind in the back of my apartment and connect to this router from my wireless laptop, is this possible?
