PC is quite loud even without fans on

Hi guys,

Though it's not an urgent problem, I've found that my PC is quite loud, well, if you stand outside the room with the door shut you'd never know it was on, but as soon as you walk inside it's pretty noticeable. I thought it might have been one of the fans but I turned them off by literally unplugging them and then turning the system on (the only thing I didn't take out was my Corsair H60, I unplugged the fan that came with it but left the other part on the CPU).

After trying that I've found it's literally no better, could it be the H60 on my CPU? And if so, is it worth taking that off and getting something different, for example going back to a normal fan? Please suggest what else it could be, I just want my PC to be as quiet as possible. :)

Oh, and I have 4 fans - one 120mm on the side, the one that comes with the H60, another 120mm on the front and one more 120mm on top.

My system spec is:

i7-4770k 3.5GHz
16GB RAM HyperX
Palit GTX 760 2GB
Corsair H60 Cooling system
1TB HDD
3TB HDD
125GB SSD

Thanks guys, it's probably worth mentioning that I've had this system for about 3-4 years now, though I've kept it clean physically.

No, I would not recommend lining components with the insulating pads as they would probably cause your components to heat up unnecessarily.

Looks like changing the fan on your H60 or verifying that your hard-drives aren't causing the surrounding metal to vibrate/rattle is your only option.

Once again, Noctua fans are very very silent and might...

Sounds like your H60 (if it's the only one "on" and the loudness persists) is the problem. Or, my personal opinion, is that the hard drives are making the noise by vibrating your case.

Here's what I can suggest:

1). Lower your fan speeds using a physical fan controller or a software fan controller like "SpeedFan"

2). Buy some cheap sound insulating pads made for PCs that line the inside of your case -> LINK

3). Change the fan on your H60 radiator for a "Noctua" fan or other aftermarket fan, which are known for being particularly silent.

4). My personal guess is that the sound may be coming from your hard-drives, as the metal plates/discs spin around on the platter and then vibrate your case. This can be avoided by placing rubber stoppers around the screws that mount your hard-drive.

fan noise of the h60 can reach 54 dBa, while the premium high end fans, such as noctua, are below 19dBa to 30 (silent to whisper level). you probably need to change the h60 stock fan.

Just to say, the PC isn't that loud, I can hear it if I have nothing playing through my headphones but with something on such as music or a video, it isn't really noticeable unless the media in question is kind of quiet.

"Not that loud" is the perfect problem for those insulating pads to fix if you're into that. Pretty easy fix I think they even have adhesive on them, especially good if your PC doesn't have a window.

I've taken a look at the insulating pads, though they look pretty good, my issue would be that I have a Coolermaster HAF-X case, which is kind of awkwardly shaped and has a window, I'm just wondering (and though this info is probably easily attainable to get myself) can I cover individual components with it or can I only line the case?

Cheers for the advice by the way

Once again, Noctua fans are very very silent and might fix your problem in a second and a half. -> Link To One That Fits Your H60

Good luck mate.

If it's not any of the fans, then that just leaves either the hard drives or the pump in the H60. You can disconnect the Hard drives (power and sata) to check those. If it's the pump, I've seen it described as everything from a high pitched whining to a rattling noise, so it varies.

Hi all,

I bought a new CPU fan to replace the stock one that came with my H60. That made it a bit quieter but not as quiet as it could be, what I did was unplug all of my HDDs, tested it, still pretty loud, I then unplugged all of my fans including the CPU one and tested it for a few seconds, still as loud as it was before. In all honesty I was pretty confused at first, but I forgot to unplug one thing - my graphics card.

I didn't think at first it would be that, seeing as it has one fan and a small one at that, but I thought it was worth a shot, I took that out and bam, there we go, quite a bit quieter, I gave the fan a clean out and it's a tiny bit better but I think due to it's age and the fact that I've never cleaned it out before doesn't help. I ordered a new graphics card a while back before this started happening so hopefully it'll make everything a bit better.

Cheers for all of your suggestions guys
