HDD failure in RAID 10 - brand new build

I'm wrapping up a new build using RAID 10 w/ (4) WD Black 2tb HDD's, and after having installed and updated software, and copied my data from my old machine to the new one, Intel RST is telling me I have a problem with the array. One of the 4 HDD's has an error.

Volume 1: Degraded
Port: unknown
Port location: unknown
Status: missing

Mobo is Asus X99-Deluxe II. I set up the RAID 10 in Asus BIOS. That went smooth and easy. Created the volume number and name in Windows Disk Management. Copying data to new volume went smoothly.

At one point Intel RST had given me the option to run a function to rebuild the volume. I restarted to see if the same errors came up, and the same HDD is showing an error, but I'm not getting the option to rebuild. My data is still safe on the old machine.

HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is my first build with RAID.

Questions:
Is the disk faulty, and do I need to replace it? How to determine if the disk is bad (it's brand new)?
Is the disk OK, and do I need to rebuild the volume, and then copy the data to it again?
Is it possible the SATA port of the mobo is faulty?
Is it possible the SATA cable or the power is faulty?

Thanks in advance for any advice and guidance. Much appreciated. mpp

As mentioned DLG should work just fine, but like any other software, sometimes there might be an issue with a specific system preventing it from running properly. Unfortunately I can't determine what could've caused this. Your feedback is appreciated!
The important thing is that everything is running fine right now. It might have been a loose connection or something. Sometimes reseating the cables or components back to the slot would fix things up, I just didn't expect it to be that easy this time.

Anyway, good job! Keep an eye on it to make sure that everything keeps running smoothly. :)
Hey there, mpukas.

Sorry to hear about the issues you're having with your drive. :\

Basically all your assumptions are possible in this case. It could be a faulty port or a faulty SATA cable, so give it a try with different ones, to see if the same thing happens. It could also be a faulty drive. It's not a common thing but just as with any other mechanical and/or electronic device, it's possible for you to get a faulty one even if it's new. These things happens sometimes. So I'd recommend that you download DLG (Data Lifeguard) and run both tests (Quick and Extended), to see if anything alarming pops-up. Here's how to do it: How to test a drive for problems using Data Lifeguard Diagnostics for Windows.

Hope that helps. Please let me know how everything goes.

Boogieman_WD,

Thanks for the feedback. I downloaded and installed DLG, but I get an error message the program has stopped working. It won't run for me. I've uninstalled and reinstalled a couple of times, and it still won't run. Any further advice? Thnx

That's really odd. It should have no issue with any of the currently supported Windows versions. Anyway if you can't go with DLG you can check out this article for a 3rd party option and give it a try: http://pcsupport.about.com/od/toolsofthetrade/tp/tophddiag.htm. If you'd like you could double-check with another one as well, just for good measure.

Other people have been having the same issue w/ DLG not opening. There's a thread on it at the WD forum;
DLGDIAG for Windows has stopped working

I downloaded SeaTools from Seagate, and ran their basic Short Generic and Long Generic tests. Both came up with no errors. I went into the UEFI BIOS to see what info was there, and the it reported the RAID was degraded, and listed only 3 of the 4 disks.

I unplugged the SATA cables from the mobo ports, and plugged them into different ports; the volume was not recognized at all in Windows or RST. I then shutdown, and plugged the SATA cables into the original ports, and then volume was recognized with no errors. Intel RST rebuilt the volume (it took several hours) and all seems to be fine. RST is reporting the RAID 10 Volume as status: normal.

I really have no idea what happened. It seems that somehow the disk was not being recognized and by unplugging and re-plugging, it was then recognized. Thanks for your help. mpp
