Hello... Typically it would be intels "Q" Quad core S775 CPU's... check gigabyte p31-es3g MB compatibility list with the BIO's version you have installed. Q6600 are common, but the Q9xxx were up to 3.0 ghz models and there was a "Extreme" model Q97xx 3.2ghz?

Core2 Extreme QX9650 is the best processor it supports. The board needs BIOS F2 or higher for that processor.

however depending on the cost of the CPU, it might be cheaper to get onto a new platform and a low end CPU.

Actually it says the qx9770 isn't supported (N/A) in the bios column. Not sure why they listed it on the chart.
