I have a MSI GTX 780 3GB and was wondering if I need a new gpu to be able to play 4k games at medium settings and If i do which one should I go for.

Get 1080, its only $150 more then 1070 at the current prices if you look for it hard, there is lot of overpriced ones but you can skip those and find some around ~620.
In theory you can shop for 980ti but its not worth it anymore unless its SLI and you spend more then single 1080.

do not go 4k without a 980ti at least some real good deals right now but 1070 is pretty amazing for what it is
