hi,

Just bought an Radeon R9 290 MSI twin Frozr

the temps seem to be pretty high, i understood that reference cards run at 95c thats why i wanted a 3rd party card. I got home and installed tried out Battlefield and benchmarks like heaven and card heats up to 90+ many occasions especially on benchmarks.

my previous card was a hd 7970 ghz edition and that topped out at 57c. my airflow should be ok ive 4 fans pulling in with a 5th as exhaust theres never been issue with 7970

i cant find any target temp control in CCC, ive had a go with msi afterburner with custom fan profiles but i dont know how to use settings on it properly.

how can i keep temps to around 80c max? i was really looking forward to this card

thanks

Solution
amd desigined these to run around 95c max and under full load they get there(unless you have good liquid cooling). they will run hot and theres not to much you can do besides underclock/undervolt it if it concerns you. (this is just normal r 290 temps)

benchmarks are designed to push the limits of it. actually play your games and see what your temps are. usually they will be lower 60-70c.

Splendid
Run MSI afterburner and adjust the fan curve to set the fan speeds higher to cool the card especially under load.
Move the bar on the graph to increase the fan speed at the desired temp range, keep testing it and tweaking it to find the sweet spot.

Just an update.

ive done a custom fan profile which i think works now temps are better.

i think games like battlefiled fallout etc were hitting 90+ because with my old 7970 i always used super resolution to bump it to 1440p as it looks better.

i tested battlefiled hardline and the moment i dropped to 1080p even with changing textures and few other settings to ultra the temps came down from 85 ish to below 80 combined with fan profile. even with an overclock battlefield runs around 78c

so far so good hopefully i can adjust things a little more

thanks for your answers
