I have a middle end GPU and CPU, but I can only upgrade one, which should that be?

Hello Toms Hardware!

I am thinking about buying a new part for my computer, the problem is. I don't know which part to start with.

I am pretty inexperienced when it comes to what upgrade won't kill my computer. So, what should I upgrade first, my GPU, or CPU?

(I use my computer mostly for gaming.)

If you need to know what any of my current parts are just ask!

Thanks, Luke

First, you have to ask yourself what games are you playing, as some will be GPU-heavy or CPU- heavy. For example, Rust is a GPU-heavy game, so if you were addicted to Rust you would up your graphics card. Same thing with a CPU- heavy game, for example PlanetSide 2.
It all comes down to what you play, you can probably find out if your games are GPU intensive or CPU intensive just with a google search :)

Generally if you really have a mid range CPU then a better GPU will make the most difference, and will transfer to another computer later. An exception might be for Racing sims with 20 cars on the track that all need real time physics calculations. Be aware that your PSU will limit your choices on GPU mostly based on what extra PCIe power cables are available. If you would list your MB, CPU, PSU, and current GPU then people could make specific reccomendations for you.
