I have a laptop with an integrated graphics card and I'm going to get an external gpu. I know I should just make a desktop but due to family things I don't have the space or budget for such a thing.

I want to know if a GTX 980Ti will severely bottleneck my laptop.

And would a bottlenecked 980Ti be better than a 970 that's not bottlecked.

Solution
No you should be fine with that, i would suggest putting it on boost so you get the 3.5Ghz then it should run to par with the 980Ti. i have a 980ti and im running an intel core i7-4770k running 3.5ghz and on boost 3.9ghz and mine runs it really smooth i also have a super clocked version of the 980ti. the thing i would watch out for is the temps, the temps may run a little but higher for the cpu if you were to put it on boost, but you dont really have to worry until the cpu hits around 80 to 90 degrees. but if you get the chance to get a upgrade on a better cpu take it, also go for the 980ti not the 970 as you will bottleneck and should be fine. hope i was some help to you

Thanks for responding to my question so quickly mate. But how do I put it on boost, by boost do you mean overclocking it ? I have no idea how to do so. Thanks in advance.

too boost your cpu you need to go into to bios and there should be a way to activate the boost from there. as i do not know what bios you have i cant really help you there. but no you do not have to overclock, its just a simple boost you should youtube how to boost your cpu in your bios

also check what wattage your laptop is, the gpu is a 600watt minimum make sure your laptop has enough power to power such a demanding gpu. i would also like to add if at times you did bottleneck it would only be a slight bottleneck but if you really want to be safe id go for the 970 until you can afford a good desktop in the future

Thank you.

Which laptop? How will you connect to an external enclosure?

That is an almost 5 year old hyperthreaded dual core cpu. Not sure that's a good match with a 980ti.

And your laptop wouldnt have anything to do with powering a gpu. Enclosures have their own brick.

This is a Dell E6420, it originally had an i5 Processor so I changed it to this one. The enclosure I'll be using is an external gpu connector tha tuses the express card slot on the right side of this laptop. I won't get the full power of the gpu so I think I won't bottleneck it as much as I would if I had this on a desktop setup.

I'd be interested to hear how that turns out. Never seen one of those enclosures for cheap, plus the video card. Doesn't seem as cost effective as just getting a new laptop with a faster cpu and gpu. Post back here with results if you can - might help someone else!
