It just says: You must have Steam running to open the application, when I had it open.
For about an hour now I've tried to open it, and I've noticed a few problems with Steam.
I tried:
The Steam app (Downloaded and all)
The website
And just clicking the game.

So what happened was:
This morning I got up to play my game, turned on the PC, started up Steam, went to library, clicked 'PLAY' on my game, it was a normal startup.

Anyway, my game has a tiny little menu before you play, there is 4 options (5 if you count ads)
PLAY
WORKSHOP
AOE WEBSITE
ACHIEVEMENTS
Yes, it was Age of Empires.
I clicked PLAY
The menu thing closed like normal, then I was greeted with this message:

Critical Error - X

You must have Steam running to open the application,

No files found.

Please help me.

Solution
Restart , try to exit steam and relog (my friend had this issue this morning and all he did was exit steam and re log to his account. Also try opening the application without using steam (let steam be up and running but still go to the game's folder in steamapps>common and try to find the ageofempire.exe or something similar and start it that way
