So it all started when a recent Windows 10 update was installed on to my brother's laptop. Laptop restarted and did not boot up. Encountered a srttrail.txt error. Read many posts on this. I tried bootrec, bcdedit, startup repair, chkdsk, scannow......the laptop always got stuck at a blank black screen or could not repair the startup.

I downloaded an ISO from the microsoft site to try and re-install Windows, burned it to a dvd at max speed (using my laptop), then booted it on to my brother's laptop under Legacy Boot mode. It booted well except it could not accept the product key which came with the ISO file (which came from a site that was partnered with Microsoft). We checked the product key multiple times....no success. I tried downloading a pre-activated ISO file to bypass the product key screen and I get to the "Select driver to install" screen telling me I am missing a media file. I downloaded a chipset onto a usb drive and selecting it but the laptop keeps saying "Could not find any drivers".

So.....is the ISO corrupted? Did I burn the ISO too fast? Is the DVD scratched? Do I need to edit any settings in BIOS? This is an Acer laptop with an i7 processor.

By the way, By brother downgraded to Windows 8.1 because he used somebody else's Windows 8.1 cd to repair his computer.....or at least that's what he told me. Anyhow, his OS is now 8.1. That's why I'm posting in the Windows 8 forum.

Solution
well install windows 10 with the iso download for Microsoft and skip the entering key part(its an option). windows 10 after the install should see that the system was prev activated with windows 10 and will not ask for a key (it will retrieve it from the server and should show "digital entitlement" when it self activates).

the windows 8.1 code is prob an OEM code so to use it you need the recovery media from the manufacture.
"I tried downloading a pre-activated ISO file to bypass the product key screen" don't do piracy.

" It booted well except it could not accept the product key which came with the ISO file" Microsoft provides windows 10 iso for free on there site, where did you download this iso that came with a key????? how much did you pay for this key???? sounds like you didn't get it from a legal seller offhand

simple question is if the computer came with windows 10 (and was a legal activated copy) you should have just done a clean install of windows 10 using Microsoft iso from there website and it be done. you shouldn't have to be bypassing keys to do install. Sounds like you are trying to install pirated versions of windows which can have virus/spyware and other bad things.

don't do piracy. <== Well I think I can since I have a LEGAL copy of Windows 8.1. I don't want a pirated copy but if you're stuck somewhere and you're out of ideas, what am I supposed to do? I'm trying to get passed the "type in your product key" screen because it is unable to verify the product key that CAME WITH the LEGAL copy of Windows 8.1 that I had. Usually, I can activate the product key once I get to the desktop screen. I've also seen posts on other sites where people also encountered the same error with their product keys.

Then I downloaded ANOTHER legal copy of it from DreamSpark since apparently the one from Microsoft did not work. It creates an ISO for you but during the creation of the ISO, it asks for a product key which didn't work for me. The tool was unable to connect to the internet and obviously I am connected to the internet. The key I had was provided by DreamSpark. I paid nothing for the key.

where did he get the windows 8.1 key from??????? <== you use way too many question marks.....

Not sure why he used a windows 8.1 iso to attempt a reset....I guess he didnt have a windows 10 iso and didn't know what to do. But the laptop is now downgraded to windows 8.1, stuck at setup. you really shouldn't accuse people of pirating things.... We live in the Philippines so calling Microsoft would be a challenge.
